My sister Traci and I have been homeschooling for over 8 years now...from Kindergarten up through 8th grade. We can't even imagine the overwhelming situation that parents are feeling right now who have been thrown into homeschooling. We hope we can help with that by letting you know a few things and then giving you some resources.
- Every day is a learning day. Reading, exploring, cooking, watching educational programming...all that is considered learning, therefore schooling.
- California requires 175 learning days. More info here. Hours do not need to be logged.
- If your child completes his/her work in a couple hours, don't be surprised! Remember, at school the teacher is having to deal with 20-30 kids, which takes a lot more time.
- It's OK to sleep in. It's OK to take dance party breaks. It's OK to stay in your PJ's all day...might not want to make that one a habit though! :)
- Frustrations will run high between you and your child(ren). This is all new and again, you, the parent, were thrown into the fire! It's OK to feel overwhelmed! But give yourself grace. You CAN do this! It might be unorganized and chaotic at first, but we promise, it will get better. When frustrations are high, stop school, do something fun like play a game or get outside, and then try approaching the subject again.
